Ways To Make Your Snowdonia Holiday More Affordable #13

Updated: Jun 28, 2022

Steam trains, a picnic and a lake walk for free!

We know that very often it's not the price of accommodation that makes a holiday un-affordable but more what will be spent during the holiday. This is especially true when there are children who need entertaining or who are being tempted by ice creams, attractions and gift shops. In this series of blogs we look at ways to keep the spending down by suggesting things that will help keep what you spend to a reasonable level and things that can be done for FREE.

One of our favourite afternoons out is a trip to Tan y Bwlch station on the Ffestiniog railway. It's in a lovely location, tucked away at the back of Plas Tan y Bwlch estate.

Parking on the station is free and it's lovely to see the steam trains come and go and watch the goings on on the platform... great spot for people watching ;-) Between trains it is nice and peaceful and the trees are filled with bird song.

If you can drag yourself away, down the hill is Llyn Mair with its lovely (and not too long) lake walk. There are picnic benches there so sit and while away a little time. But there is also enough space for children to play and, we have seen people swimming in the lake in the summer (but I can't advise how safe this is).

There is a little cafe at the station and free loos which is always a bonus.
